conservation technologies… we could meet and surpass the Kyoto targets easily in a way that would strengthen, not weaken, our economies'. Global warming and melting ice, he suggested, could lead to a future climate conference in Canada being held on 'a raft somewhere'. Clinton pointed out that there was a growing demand for action within the US, highlighting efforts by 10 states and 192 cities to cut their emissions. Negotiators finally agreed the revised statement as the talks dragged on into the small hours. They also agreed an action plan among Kyoto members to extend the protocol when its first phase expires in 2012. The next Kyoto phase will demand harsher cuts in greenhouse gas pollution from developed countries, but the scope and timing of these have not yet been agreed. Rees reiterated the call first made by the science academies of the G8 nations, along with Brazil, China and India, in a joint statement last June directed at the G8 leaders meeting in Gleneagles in Scotland. " Such a study should help bring the international community closer together in the battle against climate change, " he said. Some researchers have said global reductions of between 60 and 80 per cent will probably be needed by 2050 to stabilise the climate. They believe that should keep the global average temperature to within 2°C above pre-industrial levels. The world is already 0.7°C towards that, with another 0.6°C expected to come over the next few decades. The role of developing nations in the new phase of Kyoto remains unclear, though they will probably not be asked to take on binding emission targets. One idea is voluntary targets, with no penalties for missing them but incentives for exceeding them. China and India have been a focus for the talks. Both have huge reserves of coal, whose burning would swamp any emission cuts by the developed world, further supporting the major study Rees and others believe is urgent. Britain has seen a recent upsurge in the activities of animal rights activists, whose targets have included Oxford University's plans for its new biomedical sciences building and the Huntingdon Life Sciences research facility. The impact of such activities on the public is unclear but a new survey suggests that support for the use of animal tests in medical research is not faltering, and may be slightly gaining ground. And research support bodies have had some recent …

largely unproductive debate over the propriety and value of using animals in medical and scientific research, testing and education. Emotionally evocative images and simple assertions of opinion and fact are the usual fare. But we do not have to accept such low standards of exchange. Sound bites and pithy rhetoric may have their place in the fight for the public’s ear, but there is always room ...
متن کاملThe brain disease model of addiction: is it supported by the evidence and has it delivered on its promises?
Since 1997 the US National Institute on Drug Abuse has advocated a brain disease model of addiction (BDMA). We assess the strength of evidence for the BDMA in animals, neuroimaging studies of people with addiction, and current research on the role of genetics in addiction. We critically assess claims about the medical and social benefits of use of the BDMA because the social implications are of...
متن کاملAcceptance of animal research in our science community
Animal research is debated highly controversial, as evident by the "Stop Vivi-section" initiative in 2015. Despite widespread protest to the initiative by researchers, no data is available on the European medical research community's opinion towards animal research. In this single-center study, we investigated this question in a survey of students and staff members at the Medical University of ...
متن کاملAcceptance of a price discount 1 ACCEPTANCE OF A PRICE DISCOUNT: THE ROLE OF THE SEMANTIC RELATEDNESS BETWEEN PURCHASES AND THE COMPARATIVE PRICE FORMAT
Two studies are reported where people are asked to accept or not a price reduction on a target product. In the high (low) relative saving version, the regular price of the target product is low (high). In both versions, the absolute value of the price reduction is the same as well as the total of regular prices of planned purchases. As first reported by Tversky and Kahneman (1981), findings sho...
متن کاملThe animal experimentation quandary: stuck between legislation and scientific freedom
M any European citizens see animal welfare a matter of great importance [1]. Initiatives such as Stop Vivisection, which petitions politicians to abandon all support for animal experimentation in biomedical and toxicological research (http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/initiatives/successful/details/2012/ 000007/en?lg=en), might suggest that a majority of Europeans want to see the u...

Background and objectives: Extra livestock than grazing capacity is one of the main effective factors on rangeland degradation. Most of the country's pastures have Extra livestock than grazing capacity, and from the past until now, the policy of dealing extra livestock by using legal punishments has not been able to completely solve this problem. Lack of attention to grazing capacity has led t...
